How Does Peptide Therapy Work?

 Peptide therapy is a new and emerging field of medicine that can improve virtually any disease state, diminish pain, enhance health and performance, and slow the aging process.  A peptide is defined as a molecule made by combining two or more amino acids.  Amino acids are the building blocks of the body, and ultimately life, used to form proteins.  There are 20 amino acids in the body, nine of which are “essential”, meaning they can not be made and must be obtained from the diet.

By definition, peptides are less than 50 amino acids bound together.  Greater than 100 amino acids is considered a protein.  Peptides work as signaling molecules that take advantage of normal body functions at the cellular level.  As clinicians, we take that knowledge and support those functions for improved health and longevity.  Basically, peptides facilitate cell-to-cell communication, telling the body which cells to activate and which to turn off, all without the harmful side effects of traditional medications.

There are over 7,000 naturally occurring peptides in the human body.  With over 200 in clinical development and more than 60 FDA approved currently.

Human Growth Hormone Peptides

Commonly referred to as growth hormone secretagogues, meaning they induce secretion, there are two primary categories or classifications of human Growth Hormone (hGH) peptides- Growth Hormone Releasing Hormones (GHRH’s) and Growth Hormone Releasing Peptides (GHRP’s). The basis of function for both is to physiologically elevate Growth Hormone (GH) and IGF-1 levels. Growth hormone has roles in stimulating growth, cell reproduction and cell regeneration; in children promoting growth and in adults helping to maintain normal body structure and metabolism. Insulin-like Growth Factor, or IGF-1, is stimulated by growth hormone and has an anabolic effect in adults. 

Ipamorelin

Ipamorelin is considered a Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide or GHRP.  It is comprised of 5 amino acids.  Ipamorelin is Ghrelin like in nature and functions to stimulate the release of growth hormone from the anterior pituitary.  It functions to significantly increase plasma growth hormone levels, safely and without side effects.  Ipamorelin helps your body decrease fat, increase lean muscle mass, increase collagen production, achieve better, more restorative sleep, increase bone mineral density, increase cellular repair and regeneration, amongst many other benefits.

CJC 1295

CJC 1295 is a modified form of growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) that results in increased production of growth hormone.  It is comprised of 30 amino acids, it contains the first 29 amino acids of GHRH, similar to Sermorelin, but has an additional amino acid.  What this modification allows for is an increased half life, from approximately 10 minutes with Sermorelin, to 30 minutes with CJC-1295.  Ultimately, this leads to the requirement of a lesser dose for the same results in comparison with Sermorelin.  The benefits of CJC-1295 include increase in growth hormone release leading to increased muscle growth, increase in bone density, improved concentration and memory, increase in fat loss and weight reduction, increase in collagen, and increase in cellular repair. 

Sermorelin

Sermorelin is a growth hormone secretagogue comprised of 29 amino acids. It functions similar to Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone (GHRH) produced by the hypothalamus. Sermorelin increases the production and release of growth from the pituitary gland to increase serum levels of growth hormone and IGF-1. Sermorelin supports natural human Growth Hormone, hGH, production which is crucial for cell regeneration and reproduction. Ultimately, leading to improved energy and vitality, enhanced cognitive function, decreased body fat through increased lean muscle mass, better sleep and overall anti-aging benefits.

Macimorelin

Macimorelin is a synthetic growth hormone secretagogue that is FDA approved for the diagnosis of adult growth hormone deficiency.  Macimorelin mimics ghrelin, a peptide hormone known to cause a release of growth hormone.  It functions by binding to the receptor that activates growth hormone in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to stimulate the release of growth hormone into the circulatory system.  Macimorelin is currently undergoing numerous clinical studies for dosing regularity and degree of improvements, one of which Re-new Institute is a participant.  Macimorelin is not well known to most practitioners and with its oral administration and safety profile, widely underutilized.

BPC-157

Also known as “Body Protection Compound”, BPC 157 is the most widely used peptide world wide.  It is comprised of a sequence of 15 amino acids.  BPC-157 is naturally occurring and isolated from gastric, or stomach juice.  Due to its significant anti-inflammatory effects, it is used for tissue healing and repair, helping improve injuries, decreased recovery time and alleviation of joint pain.  BPC 157 also has benefit in gastrointestinal (GI) diseases such as acid reflux or GERD, leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn’s Disease.

Thymosin Alpha 1

Thymosin Alpha-1, or TA-1, is a small protein, produced naturally by the thymus gland.  It is believed to be responsible for restoring immune function.  The thymus gland is where immune cells known as T cells, which are vital to adaptive immunity, mature and are released when prompted to do so by the Thymosin Alpha 1 peptide.  TA 1 is pleiotrophic, meaning that it affects multiple immune cell types involved in immune suppression.  Studies have shown improvements in immune system cell subsets with the use of Thymosin Alpha-1, leading to the potential for the treatment of a multitude of diseases.  Thymosin Alpha 1 exhibits antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties, suppression of tumor growth, increased vaccine effectiveness, and protection of the body from oxidative damage.

Thymosin Beta-4

Thymosin Beta 4, or TB-4, is a naturally occurring peptide that is isolated from the thymus gland.  While it is responsible for producing several hormones, it is associated with the immune system rather than the endocrine system.  Thymosin Beta-4 is found in higher levels in platelets and white cells.  It supports immunity and assists in the production of antibodies.  TB-4 also plays a role in tissue repair, where it demonstrates an ability to protect and regenerate injured tissues.  Thymosin Beta 4 has a long list of potential uses but regardless of the reason for use of TB 4, patients exhibit overall improved mortality (death rate) with its use. 

Other Peptides

These peptides are used for a variety of purposes from sexual dysfunction or disorders to weight loss to roles in DNA repair, anti-aging, hair follicle growth, the removal of anti-oxidants and inflammation. 

 

PT-141

PT141 was developed from the peptide hormone Melanotan. It is an effective peptide in treating sexual dysfunction in both men (erectile dysfunction or impotence) and women (sexual arousal disorder). Unlike popular ED drugs that act upon the vascular system, PT 141 increases sexual desire via the nervous system. 

AOD 9604

AOD 9604 is a peptide that is a fragment from human Growth Hormone.  It is a 15 amino acid sequence that is the last 15 amino acids of Growth Hormone.  It is in this sequence that the fat reducing properties of Growth Hormone are found.  Also known as “Anti-Obesity Drug”, AOD 9604 is one of the best peptides for weight loss.  Additionally, it has been proven to assist in fat reduction, increase metabolism, and play a role in cartilage repair and regeneration. 

GHK-Cu

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper peptide that was originally isolated from plasma but has since been demonstrated in saliva and urine.  It is a tri-peptide known to decrease with age.  GHK-Cu has been demonstrated to have roles in DNA repair, hair follicle growth, anti-aging properties, as well as function in wound healing and have potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.
