Hormones

What should you know about hormones?

Your body’s hormones control most of your basic bodily functions. They serve as an internal communication system between cells throughout the body. They coordinate everything from digestion and growth to your appetite, immune function, mood, and libido. So, when your hormones are out of balance, even slightly, it can have a big impact on your health and well-being.

Each part of your body – from your brain to your skin, your heart, your kidneys, and your muscles has a specific function. The body takes direction from your endocrine system to function properly. The glands of the endocrine system send out hormones that tell each part of your body what to do, when to do it, and for how long. They work slowly, over time, and affect many different processes in the body including:

  • Growth and development
  • Metabolism – how your body gets energy from the foods you eat
  • Sexual function
  • Reproduction
  • Mood
  • Virtually every bodily function

There are a variety of reasons why our hormones get out of balance, especially as we age. Those imbalances can lead to problems like diabetes, weight gain or loss, infertility, weak bones, and a variety of other problems causing our bodies and our mind to function poorly.
